How to Set Up the Moby 5500 Bluetooth Device
A new pairing confirmation workflow has been introduced for the Moby 5500 device. This update improves pairing reliability when multiple Moby devices and iPads are present in the same environment and helps ensure the correct device is being connected to the correct iPad.
Before testing or setting up the new pairing workflow, it is important to reset any existing Bluetooth relationships between the iPad and previously paired Moby devices.
Preparation Steps Before Pairing
Before beginning the pairing process with the updated foreUP app, complete the following preparation step on the iPad.
- Open your Settings on the iPad.
- Select Bluetooth.
- Locate any previously paired Moby 5500 devices in the device list.
- Tap the information icon next to the device and select “Forget This Device”.
- Repeat this process for any Moby 5500 devices listed.
This step ensures that the new iOS level pairing flow occurs during initialization and aligns with the updated pairing confirmation process.
Starting the Pairing Process
Once the latest version of the foreUP app has been installed and the Bluetooth device has been forgotten in iPad settings, the pairing process can begin.
There are two ways the pairing process may start.
- The first method is manual initialization. In the Sales or Food and Beverage module, select the Initialize Bluetooth Card Reader button.
- The second method uses the new “Automatically Initialize Moby on Sale setting”. When this setting is enabled, the pairing and initialization process will begin automatically when items are added to the cart and the Credit Card payment option is selected.
Initial iOS Permission Prompts
When pairing the Moby 5500 reader for the first time after forgetting the device, iOS will present two permission prompts.
- The first prompt asks for permission to allow foreUP to find devices on the local network. Select “Allow”.
- The second prompt asks for permission to allow foreUP to find Bluetooth devices. Select “Allow”.
*Both permissions must be accepted for the pairing process to continue.
After accepting the permission prompts, iOS will display a Bluetooth pairing request for the Moby 5500 device. Select “Pair” on this prompt.
Confirm Light Sequence Verification
After the Bluetooth pairing request is accepted, a new confirmation screen will appear in the foreUP app.
This screen displays the message: “Please confirm light sequence”.
Below this message, a rectangular display will show four LED colored indicators representing the lights on the Moby 5500 device.
- Red
- Green
- Yellow
- Blue
During this step, one, two, or three of these lights will begin blinking within the on screen display. At the same time, the physical Moby 5500 will display the same blinking lights on the device itself.
The purpose of this step is to ensure the iPad is pairing with the correct Moby device.
If the blinking lights shown in the foreUP app match the blinking lights on the Moby device, select Confirm on the confirmation modal.
If the lights do not match, two options are available.
- Repeat Lights. This option will replay the blinking light sequence so it can be verified again.
- Decline. This option cancels the pairing attempt and allows the pairing process to be restarted.
Successful confirmation will complete the pairing process and allow the Moby reader to continue initializing, so you can begin to accept sales.
Device Lock Feature
Overview
A new device lock feature has been introduced to improve reliability when multiple Moby 5500 readers and iPads are present in the same environment. This feature allows an iPad to be locked to a specific Moby 5500 device so the app consistently connects to the intended device during initialization and the sales workflow.
This helps prevent situations where an iPad may attempt to connect to the wrong device when multiple devices are powered on within Bluetooth range.
Accessing Payment Settings
The device lock feature can be accessed through the foreUP app’s internal settings menu. To open this menu:
- Triple tap anywhere within the foreUP app. This will display an iOS configuration toolbar.
- From this toolbar, select the gear icon to open the Settings page.
- From the Settings page, select Payment Settings.
Locking an iPad to a Specific Moby Device
Once inside Payment Settings, you will see the Moby 5500 device that is currently paired with the iPad. To lock the iPad to that specific reader, follow these steps:
- Locate the paired Moby 5500 device listed on the screen.
- Select the pencil icon next to the device.
- Enable the option labeled “Lock iPad to this device”.
- Once enabled, the iPad will remain associated with that specific Moby reader.
Operational Behavior
After a device is locked, the foreUP app will only search for and connect to that specific Moby device during initialization or automatic initialization on sale. This ensures the correct device is used even when multiple Moby devices are powered on nearby.
Restart Requirement
Due to how the underlying payment SDK operates within the application memory, changing or removing the device lock requires the foreUP app to be forced closed and relaunched before connecting to a different Moby device.
Payment Settings Updates
Overview
New configuration options have been introduced within the foreUP app to provide additional flexibility in how the Moby 5500 device behaves during payment workflows. These settings allow courses to control how the device initializes and whether transaction amounts must be confirmed on the device before a payment is processed. These options are available within the Payment Settings section of the foreUP app.
Accessing Payment Settings
To access these configuration options, open the foreUP app and triple tap anywhere on the screen. This will display the iOS configuration toolbar.
From this toolbar, select the gear icon to open the Settings page.
From the Settings page, select Payment Settings.
Within this section, you will see the available configuration options for the Moby 5500 device.
Automatically Initialize Moby on Sale
The “Automatically Initialize Moby on Sale” setting allows the device to automatically initialize when a credit card transaction is started.
When this setting is enabled, users do not need to manually click the Initialize Bluetooth Card Reader button if the Moby has disconnected. Instead, the Moby device will automatically begin the initialization and connection process once items are added to the cart and the Credit Card payment option is selected.
This helps streamline the checkout process by reducing the number of manual steps required before accepting a payment.
Prompt for Amount Confirmation on Sale
The Prompt for Amount Confirmation on Sale setting controls whether the Moby device asks the user to confirm the transaction amount on the device before the payment is processed.
When this setting is enabled, the Moby device will display the total transaction amount on the iPad and prompt the user to confirm the amount before the card is inserted/tapped/swiped.
When this setting is disabled, the device will proceed directly to the payment prompt without requiring confirmation of the transaction amount on the iPad.
Courses may choose to enable this option if they want an additional verification step before customers complete their payment.
Using the Moby 5500 Reader for Transactions
Follow the steps below to complete a transaction using the Moby 5500 reader:
- In either the Sales or Food & Beverage module, add all applicable items to the shopping cart
- Once you are ready to accept payment via credit card, click Credit Card in foreUP
- The foreUP app will then send the transaction to the Moby reader for payment. You will know the reader is ready to accept payment as the device will beep and on the front of the reader, a blue light will illuminate. You can now swipe, insert the chip, or tap-to-pay to accept the credit card payment
- Once the credit card has been successfully processed, the reader will beep again and the blue light on the front will turn off. The card can now be removed from the reader
- foreUP will now complete the sale
FAQ
Q: What should I do if the initialize or firmware update fails when trying to pair the Moby reader?
A: Try completing the following troubleshooting steps:
- Turn off the Moby reader. Wait 30 seconds. Turn the reader back on and try to initialize the reader in the foreUP app again
- Log out and close the foreUP app. Open the app and log back in to try initializing again
- Turn off the iPad completely. Wait 30 seconds. Turn it back on and try initializing the device again
- Make sure the iPad has Bluetooth turned on (Settings > Bluetooth > Toggle on)
- Check to see what iPadOS version your iPad is running. Your iPadOS version must be running at least 17.3 or later
Q: What do the light indicators on the side of the Moby 5500 reader mean?
A: There are two light indicators on the side of the reader. One is for the battery, and one is for the Bluetooth.
Battery Light:
- Solid Red: Reader is powered on
- Blinking Red:
- If the light is blinking red every three seconds, the battery of the reader is low
- If the light is blinking red every second, the battery is critically low
- No Light: Device is powered off
- If the reader is connected to a power source: the blinking red light indicates the device is charging. A solid red light means the reader is fully charged
Bluetooth Light:
- Blinking Blue: The reader is in "ready-to-pair" mode
- Solid Blue: The reader is successfully paired and ready for use
Q: How do I check what iPadOS version my iPad is using?
A: On the iPad, do the following:
- Click on the iPad Settings app
- Click General
- Click About
- Under the iPadOS Version, you will see your iPadOS version. To work with the foreUP
app, your iPadOS version must be running at least 17.3 or later
Q: How do I set up my foreUP terminal with iPad mode enabled to work with the Moby 5500?
A: In foreUP, please do the following:
- Click on the module dropdown in the top left and select Settings
- Click Sales from the left column

- Scroll down and set the Enable iPad Mode setting to Yes
- Other optional settings you can also set to Yes for the iPad terminal are the Require On-Screen Signature for Credit Card Payments and Enable Tip Collection after CC and Member Balance Payments. These settings will allow your customers to sign up for the screen on the iPad and immediately add a tip once the sale is completed.
- Click Save Changes in the bottom right
Q: How do I change my iPad from "Dark" to "Light" mode?
A: On your iPad, do the following:
- Click on the iPad Settings app
- Scroll and select Display & Brightness
- Under Appearance, click Light
Q: What is the battery life of the Moby 5500?
A: On average, the Moby 5500 support the following on a full charge:
- 400 contactless/tap-to-pay transactions
- 500 chip-insert transactions
- 800 swipe transactions
Q: The Moby 5500 reader keeps automatically shutting off. Is there anything I can do about that?
A: To preserve battery life, the Moby 5500 is manufactured to automatically shut off after four to five minutes of inactivity. If the reader does automatically shut off, you will need to turn it back on and re-initialize in foreUP to get it paired with the iPad again.
The other recommendation we have is to keep the reader connected to a power source while using the reader. When the reader is connected to a power source, it will no longer automatically shut off after four to five minutes of inactivity.
If you are using the reader for a beverage cart workstation, we recommend purchasing a power bank that would allow you to keep the reader connected and charging while out on the golf course to prevent the reader for automatically shutting off.
Q: What is the Bluetooth connection range of the Moby 5500?
A: The Bluetooth connection range less than 10 feet. We recommend that when using the Moby 5500 reader, you keep it as close to the iPad as possible for the best connection and user experience
Q: If I have multiple iPads and Moby 5500 readers, can I use them interchangeably?
A: Yes, you can use the iPads and Moby 5500 readers interchangeably. For example, if a Moby 5500 reader uses up all its battery life, you could keep the same iPad and start using a different reader as long as you pair/initialize that new reader with the iPad.
Q: If I am trying to initialize multiple iPads and Moby 5500 readers at the same time, am I going to experience interference?
A: Yes. If you have multiple iPads and Moby 5500 readers you are trying to pair/initialize at the same time, we recommend doing them one by one (e.g.: Turn on one iPad and one Moby 5500 reader. Get that one successfully connected and running. Now move on to the next set of devices.)
Q: If I have two iPads and two Moby 5500 readers, I want to run them at the same time, close to each other, am I going to experience interference issues?
A: No, as long as you follow the FAQ recommendation above and turn on and pair/initialize the devices one at a time, once those devices are paired/initialized and up and running, you should not run into any interference issues.
Q: How can I tell multiple devices apart?
A: It is recommended to change the label of each device to remember them. You can tap on the "Label" text field in the settings menu and change the name of the device. You could, for example, call one "Pro Shop Red" and put a little red sticker on the moby. Then, when you lock the device to "Pro Shop Red", and the app needs to connect, it will say "Searching for 'Pro Shop Red'..." instead of "Searching for 24331067K00552". If no device is locked, it will say, "Searching for any Moby device..."
