There are three sub pages on the Marketing Automation Page:
- Messages
- Conversations
- Templates
To navigate between sub pages, select from the tabs at the top of the page:
Messages:
This table contains a lot of information! To make things easier, you can filter for campaigns with a certain status, type of either In-App Campaigns, or Standard (Push Notifications). The checkbox allows for a bulk-action to be taken utilizing the checkbox next to each row.
- Status:
- Live – this status is specific to in-app campaigns that are active in your app.
- Paused – this status is specific to in-app campaigns that have been temporarily paused.
- Done – In-App campaigns or Standard (push notifications) that have been completed.
- Aborted – In-App Campaigns that have been taken down prior to their scheduled end date.
- Waiting – Scheduled In-App campaigns or Standard (push notifications).
- Draft – In-App campaigns or Standard (push notifications) that have not been completed.
- Name: Name of the In-App Campaign or Standard (Push Notification)
- Type:
- Standard (Push Notification) displays on a user's phone to increase visibility and interaction.
- In-App campaigns are how you can engage users with targeted messages, promotions and updates within the app.
- In-App Campaigns also displays which page or module triggers the campaign to display
- In-App Campaigns also displays which page or module triggers the campaign to display
- Created: When the campaign was originally created.
- Last Modified By: The person who last edited the campaign.
- Sent: The number of unique users the message was sent to for the campaign.

- Actioned: The number of unique action button clicks on the message sent out for the campaign.
- Edit/View & Arrow
- Depending on the status of the campaign, the campaign can either be edited or viewed.
- View - Open and view details of the message.
- The down arrow allows for the following options, depending on message type & status
- Copy ID – this is not useful for foreUP and can be ignored.
- Delete.
- Duplicate – creates a copy which can be edited and resent to make similar campaigns easier to create!
- Archive.
Conversations:
- When a Push Notification is sent, it will send a golfer a message.
- When that message is selected from the customer’s phone, they will be pulled to the specific message in this conversation.
- For customer’s that don’t open the message notification – when they open the app in the top right section they will see a notification top right indicating an unread message. Selecting that notification will pull them to the “Conversations” section of the app!
Conversations are easy to create. Steps to create:
- Select the +Create Conversation button
- Enter a Name: Keep in mind customers will see the name of the conversation.
- Enter a Description of the conversation: keep in mind customers will see this.
- Upload an image: Logos or Icons are best to utilize! For example – the PGA Logo and the Calendar Icon above are more visually pleasing than the photos in our demo app.
- Once finished, select Save Changes.
Part Two – Creating Push Notifications
Creating a "Standard" Push Notification
- To create a new “Standard” push notification, navigate to Messages tab.
- Click + Message in the top right or duplicate an existing “Standard” message. Duplicating will copy an existing message completely to allow for easy tweaking and sending – or simply resending!
-
Select Selected Clubs.
-
Note: Sending to a CSV is also possible, and how you would create a “targeted” push notification. We will cover how to do that later in this article.
-
-
Enter campaign name when prompted. *Note: a single push notification is referred to as a "Campaign", even if it is sent only once.
-
After entering the campaign name, there is a breadcrumb to navigate the remaining steps. Who, What, When, and Activate to confirm or schedule the campaign. After completing a step, select the next item to continue. If you do not have time to finish completing the campaign, you are able to Save Draft to come back later. Campaigns are not auto-saved!
-
Enter who you want to send this to (can leave as it!).
-
By default, the campaign will be sent to all active app users over the last three months. Months can be changed to days, weeks, or years. As values are changed, you will be able to see how many users the campaign will be sent to that match that criteria.
-
Note: foreUP does not differentiate between active/logged in – leave this as “active”.
-
-
- Click What. This is where the content of the campaign is built out. This page looks busy, but it is very easy to use!
- Select the “Conversation” you would like the campaign to be posted in. For the Mother’s Day Brunch example, I am going to post this message in the “Events” Conversation.
- Override Notification – this option allows you to override the “Title” or “Text Message” that are part of a typical standard push notification.
- Next, it is time to build out the content of the campaign. By default, content displayed will be:
- Title
- Text
- Image
- Button (action)
- It is possible to select a different template (by selecting the icon to the right of “Your Message”.) Content from any template can be dragged up or down, by clicking and moving to where you would like it to be displayed.
- If a selected template doesn’t have all the type of content you would like, you can click the + Add button at the bottom and select the content option.
-
Build out content by click into the box, and adding information. A few things to note:
-
Images can be added via an upload from your device.
-
Once images are uploaded, they can be reused by selecting "My Message Template" Image to make it easier to find commonly utilized images.
-
Action buttons that are compatible with foreUP are:
-
Open Module
-
Open News Article
-
Open Web Link
-
-
- Select the “Conversation” you would like the campaign to be posted in. For the Mother’s Day Brunch example, I am going to post this message in the “Events” Conversation.
-
Once the content has been built out, you can see how the message will display on a customer’s phone. When the user opens the push, they will be pulled into the conversation selected to see all content!
- Here is an example of a campaign where content has been built out utilizing the defaults. When you are happy with the content, click When to move to the next step.
-
“When" is where we schedule the campaign to be sent out. This page is asking two questions:
-
Start Campaign: if immediately is selected, once the campaign has been activated it will be sent out. Alternatively, we can select “Custom Date” to schedule the campaign to be sent out.
-
Delete Messages: Push Notifications are sent to a Conversation. If we do not delete the message, it will not be removed from that conversation (until it’s deleted on the “messages” table at least). We can also schedule the message to be deleted on a certain date by selecting “On date”.
-
- Activate is the final step to review, send a test, or go back and edit prior to sending. We do recommend sending a test, at least until you are comfortable with sending messages out.
-
To send a test, you will need to have the app downloaded and take the following steps.
-
Select Save Draft to ensure no work is lost.
-
Navigate to People module.
-
Search your name.
-
Copy the “Ext. ID” numbers- in the example below for Eric Loosle, “19781651”.
-
Navigate back to marketing automation, on the messages page click edit on the campaign to reopen the campaign – if it is the newest campaign, it will be on the top row.
-
-
After testing, you will be able to “Activate” the campaign!
-
If the campaign was scheduled to send immediately – this will send immediately. If it is scheduled. for the future, the campaign will now have a status of “Waiting” on the messages page. Scheduled messages can be edited, deleted, etc. from that page if needed.
Targeted to a specific segment of customers with “CSV Upload”
- Navigate to foreUP’s Customers module.
- Export a segment of customers (customer group, or a segment identified via “advanced search”).
- Click “+” message and select CSV Upload.
-
Enter a Campaign Name when prompted.
-
Upload the CSV when prompted, and select “Person ID” as the column for user identification.
-
Note: Person ID is the only field that ties the app to the customer. Selecting other options will not result in any customers receiving the campaign.
-
- After this has been done, follow from step 6 of “Steps: Part One - Creating a Push Notification” above to complete campaign setup.
Part Three – Creating an In-App Campaign
- Click the + Message button top right OR duplicate an existing “In-App” message.
OR - Select In-App campaign
- While creating an in-app campaign, just like with a “Standard” push notification there is a breadcrumb to navigate the steps, Who, What, When, and Activate to confirm or schedule the campaign. After completing a step, select the next item to continue or select next at the bottom of the screen. If you do not have time to finish completing the campaign, you are able to “Save Draft” to come back later. Campaigns are not auto-saved!
-
The first step is the “Rule Page”. This is also where we enter in the name of the campaign. Select the rule for when to send the message (open the app, open a module, or land on the home screen)
-
If when a module is opened, note that you will need to select the module.
-
foreUP Golf Club should be the club selection.
-
Select the module from the list with a status of live.
-
-
-
After setting up the rule, select What or the Next button at the bottom of the page.
-
Send messages to conversation: If you would like this campaign to also display in a conversation, toggle this to yes and select the conversation you would like the message to display in.
-
Message type:
-
Banner Image: Image only, no text. Upload in image via computer upload, or select a previously used image from “My Message Template Image”.
-
Custom Message Builder: This is exactly like a “standard” push notification, with the exception that it will display in-app, vs. sending a notification to the customers phone. For an explanation on how to build this out, please check out the previous section of this article.
-
-
-
When is where we schedule the campaign to be sent out.
-
“Select Frequency”.
-
Send every time the person matches the rule: The user will see this message any time they open the app, the module, etc.
-
Send once, the first time the person matches the rule: The user will only see this message once.
-
Send based on a fixed schedule: To prevent messages from being seen more than once, but without the user seeing it repeatedly, we can send it on a schedule – A number of times each number of days, weeks or months. For example, we could set a campaign to display 1 time/week.
-
-
Select when to “Start Sending”. This can be immediately, or scheduled to display on a certain date.
-
Select when to “Stop Sending”. This can be set to never be taken down, or on a custom date.
-
- Select Activate and you will be able to review prior to activating the message.
