Overview
Cash rounding adjusts the final cash amount due to a set increment (for example, the nearest 5 cents). Many operations use it when pennies are hard to keep on hand for change. Line items, subtotals, and sales tax still calculate at exact values. The rounding difference posts separately for reporting and reconciliation.
This article shows how to enable cash rounding in foreUP. You turn it on once under Settings. The same configuration applies in both the Sales module and the Food & Beverage module.
Before You Start
Make sure the following are in place:
- You are logged into foreUP.
- You have access to the Settings module. If you do not see Settings, contact your facility administrator or foreUP Support at (800) 929-5737 or support@foreup.com.
- You know which Department and Category (and optionally Subcategory and GL Code) you want to use for cash rounding adjustments in reporting.
- You have confirmed that your chosen rounding mode and increment comply with applicable laws in your state, province, or local jurisdiction. When in doubt, check with your accountant or legal advisor.
How to Enable Cash Rounding
One setting controls cash rounding for both Sales and F&B. There is no separate F&B toggle.
- Open the top-left module dropdown and select Settings.
- Select Sales in the left column.
- In the blue column, select Cash Rounding.
- Choose a Cash Rounding Mode:
- Disabled — cash rounding is off (default)
- Symmetrical — rounds the cash total to the nearest interval
- Round Down — always rounds the cash total down to the nearest interval
- Round Up — always rounds the cash total up to the nearest interval
- Choose Round to the Nearest (required). Common choice: 5 Cents. Other increments (such as 10 cents, 25 cents, or $1.00) may be available depending on your needs.
- Enter Cash Rounding Department and Cash Rounding Category (required). Optionally enter Cash Rounding Subcategory and Cash Rounding GL Code.
- Click Save Settings in the top right.
How Cash Rounding Works
When enabled, cash rounding:
- Applies your selected mode and increment only to the final cash amount due
- Leaves card, digital, and other non-cash tenders unchanged
- Calculates sales tax on the exact, unrounded transaction total
- Records the rounding difference to the Department, Category, Subcategory, and GL Code you configured
Rounding Rules (5 Cents Increment)
These examples assume Round to the Nearest is set to 5 Cents.
Symmetrical:
- Totals ending in $0.01 or $0.02 round down
- Totals ending in $0.03 or $0.04 round up
- Totals ending in $0.06 or $0.07 round down
- Totals ending in $0.08 or $0.09 round up
Round Down:
- Totals ending in $0.01, $0.02, $0.03, or $0.04 round down
- Totals ending in $0.06, $0.07, $0.08, or $0.09 round down
Round Up:
- Totals ending in $0.01, $0.02, $0.03, or $0.04 round up
- Totals ending in $0.06, $0.07, $0.08, or $0.09 round up
Example (Symmetrical, 5 Cents):
| Calculated Total | Cash Collected | Rounding Adjustment |

| $10.03 | $10.05 | +$0.02 |
What It Looks Like in Sales and F&B
After you save settings, both modules show a cash-adjusted total when cash rounding is active.
Sales
In Sales, the exact sale total still appears as Total. When cash rounding applies, you also see Total via Cash with the rounded amount.
Food & Beverage
In F&B, the order summary shows the exact Total and a Total via Cash line with the rounded cash amount.
