Overview
You can assign multiple barcodes (UPCs) to a single inventory item in foreUP. This is helpful when the same product arrives from vendors with different manufacturer barcodes but should still ring up as one item at the Point of Sale (POS). Using multiple barcodes helps reduce cashier errors, speed up checkout, and keep inventory counts accurate.
Preconditions
Before adding multiple barcodes, confirm the following:
You have access to Inventory settings in foreUP
The inventory item has already been created
The item is sold through the Point of Sale (POS)
A barcode scanner is connected and functioning (recommended)
Steps: Add Multiple Barcodes to an Inventory Item
Navigate to the Inventory Module.
Select the Retail Tab.
Click the inventory item you want to edit.
Locate the Barcode / UPC section within the item details.
Scan or manually enter the first barcode.
Click Add to save the barcode.
Scan or enter the next barcode.
Repeat until all applicable barcodes are added.
Click Save Changes.
⚙️ Note: Each barcode added to the item functions identically at the POS.
Example: Items with Multiple Sizes
If you sell a product that comes in multiple sizes (such as gloves or apparel), each size may have its own manufacturer barcode.
Instead of creating separate inventory items:
Create one inventory item
Add each size’s barcode to that item
Scan any size at checkout to ring up the same product
This keeps your inventory list clean and easier to manage.
Best Practices
Use manufacturer barcodes whenever possible
Consolidate items when size-level inventory tracking is not required
Test each barcode at the POS after saving changes
Use barcode scanners instead of manual entry for speed and accuracy
Perform regular inventory audits to verify counts
💡 Tip: If you need to track inventory by size, create separate inventory items instead of using multiple barcodes.
